Licenses
ProMoT uses or builds on several other software packages. This page gives an overview of licenses relevant for ProMoT.
Detailed information about the different packages used in ProMoT and their current licenses can be found in the file licences.txt.
For ProMoT a specific license model is given to the public in two publications and on the website:
- Saez et al., Visual set-up of logical models of signaling and regulatory networks with ProMoT, 11/2006, GPL, means version 2 (because version 3 was not out at this time)
- Mirschel et al., Two different approaches for modeling biochemical reaction networks with ProMoT, 2/2009, LGPL
- ProMoT website, GPL, linked to version 3 from 6/2007
GPL License
Promot uses GPL version 2 which is incompatible with Apache Licence Version 2.0 as used by xerces (this is probably covered in the system library exception [you can use system libraries even when they are not compatible with the GPL] and probably the reason why xerces was not distributed with promot)
GPL version 3 would be compatible with the Apache Licence version 2.0
GPL is compatibile with LGPL and modified BSD licence.
BSD License
Three different versions
- 4-clause license, Old BSD License
- 3-clause license, New BSD License, (1999)
- 2-clause license, Simplified BSD License, (2008)
see Wikipedia or OSI for more details.

- JGraph 5.12. --> LGPL
- JGraph 5.13. --> New BSD License
- JGraphPad --> LGPL
- GEF 0.6 --> BSD License ? (this might be the version that ProMoT is currently using)
- GEF 0.12.3. --> New BSD License
- Piccolo2d --> New BSD License
